ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE:
Run Down
Section A is for advanced learners for it is just a normal parallel text (although the original english text has been re-written to more closely resemble the french translation) Section B is for intermediate learners. Here the French text has been broken down into twenty sentences and directly below each French sentence you will find the English equivalent. This makes the task of referring from french text to english text all that more easier. Section C is for beginner learners. Here, every word is translated individually and grammar notes are included. |
SECTION A ~ BILINGUAL STORY
FRENCH/ENGLISH
Traditional Parallel Text
|
((paragraph continued)) Stay where you are. I feel lost without my Boswell, and this affair promises to be interesting. It would really be a pity to miss it.”
|
“But your client—”
“Never mind him. I may have need of you, and he as well. Here he comes, moreover. Put yourself in that armchair and observe.” |
|
Heavy steps in the staircase and the corridor, a pause before the door, then a sharp and authoritative tap.
|
“Enter!” said Holmes.
It was a man of at least six feet six inches who presented himself before us; he was hewn like Hercules and dressed with elegance which approached bad taste. His double-breasted coat was bordered at the front and at the sleeves by larges bands of Astrakhan. |
|
The big blue cloak thrown negligently onto his shoulder was lined with flame coloured silk, and fixed at the neck by a brooch which consisted of a sparkling beryl. Boots which extended half way up his calve trimmed with fur, completed the impression of exotic opulence which was suggested by his whole of his persona.
|
|
He was holding in his hand a broad-brimmed hat and his face was hidden down to the cheeks by a black vizard mask that he had evidently adjusted that very moment, for he was still holding it as he entered.
|
|
To judge by the lower part of his face, he was a man of much determination. He had a big hanging lip and his chin, long and straight, suggested a character of resolution, even obstinacy.
|
|
“Did you receive my note?” he asked, with a deep harsh voice imprinted with a strong German accent. “I forewarned you in it of my visit.”
